Gary Lee Asleson, 65, of Charleston, SC, Professor Emeritus of the College of Charleston, passed away on Monday, December 23, 2013 at the Hospice of Charleston in Mount Pleasant. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 28 at Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1605 Harbor View Road in Charleston.
He served as chair of the South Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society during the 1984-85 program year.
Gary was born on June 14, 1948 in St. Peter, Minnesota, son of Adeline Asleson and the late Gordon Asleson. Gary attended Gustavus Adolphus College, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry in 1970. He married Mickey on the campus of Gustavus on August 21, 1971. Gary went on to earn a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Iowa in 1975, following which he began a thirty-five year career teaching Chemistry at The College of Charleston. He was an inspirational teacher and mentor to many of his students and colleagues, and he enjoyed many years serving as the advisor of the Gamma Delta Chapter of Alpha Chi Sigma Professional Chemistry Fraternity. Gary was a dedicated member of Martin Luther Church on James Island, where he served as Church Council President for a number of years. He was also an avid golfer and Cougar basketball fan who had a warm sense of humor, and who found a passion for crossword puzzles later in his life. Surviving in addition to his wife Mickey are his daughter Kristin Feierabend and her husband Karl of Wooster, Ohio; his mother Adeline Asleson of St. Peter, Minnesota; his brother Brian Asleson of Buffalo, Minnesota; nieces, Sarah and Angela Asleson, and nephew Benjamin Asleson, all of Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the College of Charleston Foundation for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (R318), or to Martin Luther Evangelical Lutheran Church.
